EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 48-year-old woman from Kentucky shot an Uber driver on U.S. 54 south near exit 20 to Loop 375 in south-central El Paso Friday, police said.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the 52-year-old man from El Paso was driving the woman passenger when she shot him for "unknown reasons," a press release from El Paso police stated.
"It's still very much unfolding and were still trying to gather a lot of the facts," said El Paso police spokesman Sgt. Javier Sambrano.
The driver was critically injured and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Sambrano said the woman called the police.
She is being detained for investigative purposes.
"She was in possession of a firearm," Sambrano said.
Our crew at the scene saw a woman with her hands restrained get out of the backseat of a police car, go on a stretcher, and be loaded into an ambulance. It is unknown if the woman is the accused shooter.
There were preliminary reports of a possible kidnapping. Police said the investigation at this time does not support that a kidnapping took place.
"That was [possible kidnapping] some initial reports that came in prior to the shooting call," Sambrano said.
The shooting took place around 2:19 p.m.
"It does appear that the Uber driver picked her up from the west side of town and was taking her to the destination that she had selected," Sambrano explained.
U.S. 54 south to Loop 375 remains closed. Traffic must exit at Paisano Exit 20A
I-10 eastbound from U.S. 54 is open, as well as I-110 southbound to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
The shooting prompted all lanes on U.S. 54 west and Paisano near the Bridge of the Americas port of entry to close. Those lanes reopened around 3:30 p.m.
Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit and Investigators from the Criminalistics Unit responded to the scene.
